Create a Band Poster Emulating the Intensity of the 1960s

Purpose:
Students will learn about the classic rock posters of the psychedelic age by creating a poster with similar characteristics for their favorite band. Students will study artwork by Bonnie MacLean and Wes Wilson. Students will examine color theory: combinations of colors that can impact the viewer psychologically. Vibrating colors, colors that create intensity, or peace. They will also learn about emphasis and composition within a poster.

Directions:
Students will learn about the history of classic rock psychedelic posters. Using these posters and understanding of color theory, they will create posters for their favorite bands or themself, emulating these styles. They can trace, draw free hand, and use other media for the creation of their poster. The final product should look, however, professional and of high quality.

Materials to use: colored pencils and sharpies. Minimum size: 11x17.

History:
Bonnie MacLean was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1961, received a B.A. from Pennsylvania State University, moved to San Francisco, California, made a series of rock and roll posters for the Fillmore Auditorium. She was married to own Bill Graham. Evoking the "detached spirituality of the sixties," her posters feature faces with trance-like expressions and meditative gazes. "What's significant," explains Ms. MacLean, "is that these posters were created with an intensity that was lived."

Wes Wilson had no academic training but learned how to print posters on a printing press. He drew everything free hand.

The Fillmore Auditoriumbecame the focal point for psychedelic music and counterculture in general, with such acts as The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Carlos Santana, The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Miles Davis, and British acts The Who, Pink Floyd, Elton John, and Cream all performing at the venue.
